In Aceh, stranded ships a reminder of the 2004 tsunami

The region on the tip of Indonesia’s Sumatra island faced some of the worst of the Indian Ocean tsunami. Even as it rebuilds, two large ships carried inland sit as reminders of the destruction.

Besakih Holy Temple to be free of stray dogs

KARANGASEM: A number of Hindu high priests in Pura Besakih Mother Temple in Karangasem regency, East Bali, conducted a special ritual to get permission to cull stray dogs hanging around the sacred Hindu temple. (more…)

Climate change to affect marine tourism

Sea and Coastal Areas Director of the Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Ministry Subandono Diposaptono said that climate change could affect the marine tourism, particularly natural tourism in coastal areas.

“When the climate changes as a result of global warming the sea surface would rise so that white sand will disappear because it is submerged with water,” Diposaptono told a seminar on climate change here on Tuesday. (more…)

Indonesia registers 23 cultural heritages, landscapes to UNESCO

Indonesia had already submitted 23 culture heritages and landscapes to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) for recognition, the Antara news agency reported here on Monday.

“We are expecting that the cultural heritages and landscapes we already submitted to the UNESCO can be put in its heritage list,” Hari Untoro Dradjat, the director general of History and Archaeology section at the Culture and Tourism ministry said. (more…)

Foreign tourists question `duties’ imposed on souvenirs

Bali’s Ngurah Rai International Airport staff officers have irritated tourists this week by slapping tax duties on souvenirs bought on the holiday island.

In an email currently doing the rounds, an Australian woman shared two cases when baggage checkers demanded customs excises on goods bought in Bali. (more…)

73 Rivers in Bali Have Run Dry

Bali’s Piped Water Supply Under Threat as Farmers Idled by Deepening Water Crisis.

The prolonged dry season currently being experienced in Bali is having profound impact on the island’s ecology. As reported by Bali Post, of the 165 rivers found on the island, 73 have now run dry. Of the remaining 92 river still flowing, most of these are doing so with substantially reduced flow rates. Many of the dried-up rivers are in West Buleleng, East Buleleng, Kubu and Seraya areas of Bali. (more…)

Indonesia Expects 54% Increase in Tourist Arrivals by 2014

Oct. 24 (Bloomberg) — Indonesia, the world’s largest archipelago, expects to attract 54 percent more tourists within four years, Tourism Minister Jero Wacik said.

The Southeast Asian country, home to the resort island of Bali, aims to attract 10 million tourists in 2014, from an estimated 6.5 million this year and 7 million next year, Wacik said. (more…)

Indonesia goes for ‘Affordable Luxury’ positioning

Tourism officials from Indonesia, which is currently running its Visit Indonesia 2009 program, have advised delegates at ITB Asia that Indonesia offers a lot more than just Bali.
I Gde Pitana, director of International Promotions, presented Indonesia’s “endless attractions”, which offer a variety of activities and experiences including spas and wellness, diving, golf (130 courses, many of international standard), adventure, culture and spiritual life. (more…)

Increase on European Tourist Flow to Bali

In the June-August period of 2009, Bali was visited by a total of 383,863 European tourists accounting for 26 percent of the overall number of foreign tourist arrivals in the period which was recorded at 1,464,739.

According to data from Bali’s Tourism Office in Denpasar on Wednesday, the number of European tourist arrivals in June was 46,124 , in July 68,782, and in August 67,815 , so that the total figure for the three-month period was 383,863. (more…)

Visit Indonesia Year to go on, higher target set

Culture and Tourism Minister Jero Wacik said Tuesday the government would continue the Visit Indonesia Year tourism promotional program in order to attain a new target of 7 million foreign tourist arrivals.
